Presented by: Phil Lelyveld – Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality (VR / AR) Initiative Program Manager, Entertainment Technology Center at USC

4:00 – 5:00 | Focus on the Future: Emerging Technologies Advisory Panel
Technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, and its early adoption into to IFEC is also accelerating. In recognition of this, it is appropriate that while the Technology Committee remains focused primarily on technology being implemented in the next 3-5 years, that a close look is given to emerging and future technologies that might be coming in the next 5-15 years. The APEX Emerging Tech Panel will brainstorm and investigate what is coming up in the next 5-15 years and educate the APEX membership. As part of APEX’s outreach to play a bigger role in the broader content delivery ecosystem, this session will include an important presentation from one of the industry’s most innovative think-tanks, the ETC@USC, on how the capture and utilization of data and analytics is impacting media.

9:30 – 10:45 | Closed Captioning Update
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established the Accessible Air Transportation (ACCESS) Advisory Committee with APEX represented by Michael Childers and Russ Lemieux. ACCESS is pursuing a negotiated regulation (“Reg Neg”) process in which stakeholders attempt to reach consensus on rules to be adopted by DOT requiring the closed captioning of IFE video and descriptive audio for the blind. In the meantime, the Closed Caption Working Group led by Bryan Rusenko will present the new APEX specification for Closed Captions, providing a better match between Hollywood's IMF/CFF workflows and IFE workflow. The spec will adopt a Time Based CC/Substandard in IMSC that will govern the migration from Bitmapped CC/Subs. Hear the most recent DOT update and vote on the closed captioning spec proposed by the Closed Captioning Working Group and Technology Committee.
Presented by:
Bryan Rusenko – Technical Director, APEX; CCWG Co-Chair
Michael Childers – CCWG Co-Chair; Lufthansa Systems

10:45 – 11:05 | Networking Break

11:05 – 11:30 | Data Storage
Availability is increasing; how is that changing buying models? This session will offer a brief overview of the previous technologies and what advancements have been made in the development of today’s systems. Remote storage at end servers and local storage at individual seats will be considered. Does this impact the PED influx?

Ray Dolby Ballroom Salon 3

1:45 – 2:15 | Inflight Connectivity & Cyber Security
This year there were claims that a cyber-security consultant hacked an aircraft during a flight via the entertainment systems of aircrafts. Many commented such actions were impossible, but questions were still raised about the practicality. What measures are in place to direct connected aircraft and passengers? Additional spectrum is coming. Does this increase concerns?
Presented by: Pete Skaves – Chief Scientific & Technical Advisor for Advanced Avionics, Federal Aviation Administration

2:15 – 2:30 | Wireless Technology
Demand continues to grow at a rapid pace as passengers increasingly demand their inflight experience to mirror that on the ground.  What does that mean for the passenger experience? Learn about an APEX Global WiFi Connectivity Roadmap that will be developed to explore the marketplace and answer these questions. This is your chance to be involved!
Presented by: Joe Leader – CEO, APEX

2:30 – 3:15
 | Gaming at 30,000 Feet
What makes an IFE game tick? What’s the difference between a Game App you’d find on the App Store and one developed for IFE? What are the restrictions for inflight gambling games? Games are one of the least known and least-understood forms of IFE entertainment. We look under the ‘hood’ to understand the challenges that software developers face in our industry; busting the myth about integrating games onto aircraft IFE systems (it’s not just plug and play!) and looking at what the future of inflight gaming will hold. With IFE suppliers switching their seatback platforms to Android, IFE games should reap the benefit of this popular platform, but have these benefits materialized?   Will the industry improve the offering of seatback games and html for wireless platforms, for games to stay relevant as an IFE offering?
Moderated by: Victor Hernandez – Director of Product Management, Ackila
Panelists:
Patrick Larocque – VP Sales - Software, Global Eagle Entertainment
Jörg Schiffmann – Sales & Marketing, GUE Tech

3:15 – 3:35 | Networking Break
